Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements made by skipper Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "weak men".

Stokes made this message in multiple conversations following his team's defeat in the second Ashes series versus the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England now face a series loss with a match to spare, the captain noted he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

But, following the opener scored 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "fragile individuals" comment after his side suffered a loss in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The team subsequently went on a break to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before this match, he said his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay in contention in the series.

Yet, Crawley stated the messaging from Stokes and head coach McCullum had remained consistent with their previous tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do something special going into this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – left England six down for 207 chasing a notional target of 435 runs.

This means, Australia need four wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an insurmountable three-nil lead after three Tests.

Defeat would prolong England's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes series loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in only 11 days of play – after England fell the first two Tests in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," admitted the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will definitely view it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. They're a very, very good side. It was always going to be hard touring here to face them. They were the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Place In Question

While the opener's innings in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his short-term future in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in the team's second knock on day four, adding to his modest returns against the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and averages 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

However, Crawley insisted any suggestion Pope is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is noise externally. There is no discussion of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
