Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People buying these medications should be aware of the danger of rapid weight regain when the therapy ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a return to original mass within about one and a half years.
Comparing Treatments
The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with older methods.
The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting generally have a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the heightened regain.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Condition?
Health authorities advise the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, given the likelihood of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have come off the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"It was like a trigger that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," said a patient.
This difficulty is worsened if patients have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Growing Adoption
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.
- Use is greater among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss hinges on combined behavioural support.
