A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's key government projects.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” affirmed the country's president.
The leader announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term concluded the prior year. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's economic vision for the southern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The construction of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic growth of its duties in national infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid rate, defying expectations to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had also sparked ongoing concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a major opposition party demanded an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This halt was suggested until the completion of a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."
In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in total accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these strategic initiatives.
