Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Major Role in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in the WACA.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the prospects of being involved.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and various factors at play, not only the physical problem, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he will feature a significant role. Ideally it's the first Test. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India recently after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

He has a history of recurring issues, with setbacks in multiple past seasons forcing him out of several home seasons in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the contest.

Bailey noted that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the initial game as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches anyway. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for another day, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
